As a department that operates on the cutting edge, MAE emphasizes that, in addition to familiarity with traditional media such as print, applicants should have a deep understanding of modern communication channels, including various social media platforms, networking sites, graphic design software, and design principles. The specialist will also use web analytic tools to measure and analyze the effectiveness of marketing and communication campaigns, using the gathered information to make recommendations to the Department Chair and faculty regarding content, web design, publications, advertising campaigns, public relations, etc. These elements have a significant impact on the academic and research programs of MAE, and the overall quality of communications from the department is often a critical factor in securing research funding from granting agencies. Applicants should be comfortable working in a minimally supervised environment as well as in a team setting, though they will be expected to perform most of their duties independently. Other essential skills for this position include the ability to manage a diverse and time-sensitive workload against deadlines, addressing multiple shifting priorities, and maintain strong attention to detail.
