Job Description:

The University of Florida, Large Animal Hospital is recruiting for a part time Large Animal Veterinary Assistant (OPS) to work approx.6-8 hours on mostly Saturdays and Sundays. This is a position that requires a motivated, well-organized and caring individual. Experience in handling horses is preferred - but will consider experience with other large farm animal species. As a member of our staff, this individual will provide assistance for client services, helping veterinary technicians with patient handling and restraint, supply stocking, equipment care and cleaning.

Duties may include, but not limited to:

  • Move, handle and/or restrain patients including loading and unloading from transport.
  • Admit and Discharge patients
  • Escort visiting clients
  • Collect payments/deposits
  • Feed, hand walk, graze and groom patients
  • Clean stalls and maintain a clean/sanitary and functionally organized clinical service area
  • Utilize chemical cleaning and disinfection agents in a safe manner
  • Monitor, record and report physical signs of patients
  • Maintain supply inventory and replenish stock
  • Laundry
  • Administer topical treatments and hydrotherapy
  • Assist in minor procedures and treatments
  • Set up, break down and clean equipment and exam areas
  • Collect Salmonella samples and submit lab requests
  • Verify and enter charges into computerized medical record

Skills Applicant should possess:

  • Must be reliable, responsible and self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Must possess the physical ability to handle, manipulate and restrain large animals and be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Must have basic computing skills
  • Must possess the ability to maintain effective working relationships others
  • Must possess the ability to multi-task.
  • Understand basic medical terminology
  • Be able to maintain a positive attitude at work
  • Be able to willingly accept constructive criticism from senior staff and clinicians
  • Will not engage in public derogatory discussions regarding coworkers, referring veterinarians, clinicians, or students
  • Ability to follow the appropriate chain of commands

Training and uniforms provided.

Shifts available days, nights and weekends.
Shift differential paid for evenings, nights and weekends.
Health insurance may be available.

Expected Salary:

$14-16 based on experience
