Job Description:

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Communications team (UF/IFAS Communications) amplifies the reach of scientific knowledge with words, technology, art, and video to an array of audiences, wherever they are. We focus on building awareness of UF/IFAS experts and expertise.

UF/IFAS Communications is seeking a detail-oriented and innovative Web Developer to join our Web Services team. This position plays a vital role in developing and maintaining responsive, accessible, and visually engaging websites that support the UF/IFAS mission of teaching, research, and extension outreach.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about web development and eager to grow their skills in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. You’ll work closely with faculty, staff, and technical teams to build and support web templates, troubleshoot issues, and ensure a seamless user experience across UF/IFAS digital platforms.

Web Development & Maintenance

  • Assist in the development of web templates and responsive sites using TERMINALFOUR (T4) Web Content Management System.
  • Support troubleshooting of technical issues and routine updates across UF/IFAS websites.
  • Contribute to CSS stylesheet upkeep and programmable layout components using Handlebars.
  • Apply foundational scripting knowledge and version control practices to maintain scalable web solutions.

User Support & Content Management

  • Provide front-line support to faculty and staff using IFAS templates and CMS tools.
  • Respond to inquiries about template deployment, content migration, and site maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the IFAS Web Team to support user needs and design improvements.
  • Assist in training OPS Web Assistants under guidance from senior staff.

Technical Evaluation & Collaboration 

  • Participate in testing and evaluation of web tools for compatibility and performance.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting efforts and workflow enhancements.
  • Document technical data and communicate relevant standards under supervision.

Professional Development & Miscellaneous Duties 

  • Attend UF and UF/IFAS web-related meetings and workshops.
  • Stay current with front-end technologies, scripting practices, and institutional standards.
  • Maintain documentation and assist with other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week, worked between the time frame of Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. Flexibility is expected regarding schedules to meet deadlines and oversee off-hours production system issues. Work outside normal working hours is required to analyze and correct critical problems which could be before or after normal working hours and on weekends. Availability to work from alternate locations is occasionally needed. Some travel may be required for events, professional development, meetings, and/or other assigned duties.

 
Expected Salary:

$53,000.00 commensurate with education and experience

Preferred Qualifications and proven experience with the following tasks/applications:

  • Web Development and Design
    • Experience developing and extending custom widgets and templates using programmable layouts and Handlebars in TERMINALFOUR (T4) WCMS.
    • Proficiency in creating themes and templates for web content management systems.
    • Ability to build websites and web applications from Photoshop mockups and technical specifications.
    • Knowledge of mobile-responsive design and modern web templates or themes.
  • Programming and Technical Skills
    • Strong understanding of front-end technologies: HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, XML/JSON.
    • Experience with back-end languages and frameworks: PHP, ASP.NET.
    • Familiarity with front-end frameworks and scripting tools.
    • Competency in Object-Oriented Programming (Java, C++, Ruby, or Python).
    • Knowledge of SASS for advanced CSS styling.
  • Fundamentals
    • Ability to design and implement algorithms and data structures.
    • Understanding of database creation, connectivity, data migration, and conversion.
    • Experience working with Web APIs, Web Services, and session management.
  • Analytics and Usability
    • Proven experience with Google Analytics reporting, custom scripting, and data visualization tools.
    • Knowledge of web usability standards and ADA accessibility requirements.
  • Systems and Tools
    • Familiarity with Single Sign-On (SSO) systems and Active Directory group permissions.
    • Experience using SQL Management Studio and version control systems like GIT.
  • Department minimum qualifications – a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or an associate degree and two years of full-stack developer experience.
