Laboratory experimental procedures
Perform experimental work for federally supported grant projects to study the effects of spaceflight on plants. This work would include looking after and organization of seed lines, seed dormancy studies, and microscopy.
Keeping detailed lab records and participating in the development of presentations of experimental results.
Verification of Arabidopsis seed lines for spaceflight studies via PCR and sequencing.
Search scientific literature to refine procedures for research and update objectives as well as maintain Endnote files as need for citations in publications.
Arabidopsis seed sterilization, growth, and harvesting, PCR, RNA/DNA extractions including recording and maintaining detailed research procedures and results.
Laboratory management and daily operations
Maintaining lab equipment, keeping inventory updated, purchasing lab and office supplies, maintaining laboratory safety programs.
Training of personnel in laboratory safety techniques, keep laboratory records, preparing reagents, maintaining clean work areas, and managing chemical and biological waste. Responsible for annual lab safety survey and inspection.
Participate in writing and editing SOPs (standard operating procedures) for the laboratory. Support students, postdocs, and visitors in laboratory work developing and optimizing protocols for PIs.
Incumbent is responsible for outreach and monitoring social media and contact forms.
Maintain several lab websites and accounts by adding content, monitoring, and applying updates, and promoting events and new research endeavors.
Public outreach by organizing lab tours and activities for groups including youth field trips, other departments at UF, and interested volunteers and graduate students. Travel for outreach will be required.
