Job Description:

The Department Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Florida is seeking a motivated and skilled Biological Scientist to join Dr. Zhijian Qian’s research team. The lab is focused on investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying hematological malignancies, particularly myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and leukemia. The Biological Scientist I will play a crucial role in supporting the lab’s ongoing research projects aimed at advancing the understanding of cancer biology and developing novel therapeutic strategies.

Essential Functions;

• Experimental Research:
Design, perform, and troubleshoot molecular and cellular biology experiments including but not limited to DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, and cell culture focused on investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying hematological malignancies, particularly myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and leukemia..

• Rodent Colony Management:
Coordinate the maintenance of the lab’s mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, and performing animal procedures related to the lab’s cancer research models.

• Data Collection and Analysis:
Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data focused on investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying hematological malignancies, particularly myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and leukemia. Focus on ensuring accuracy and consistency in reporting results. Prepare data for presentation in lab meetings, publications, and grant reports.

• Protocol Development and Optimization:
Develop and optimize experimental protocols for ongoing and new projects. Stay updated on new techniques and technologies relevant to the research.

• Collaborative Efforts:
Work closely with other lab members, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and principal investigators, to ensure the smooth execution of research projects. Provide technical support and contribute to lab meetings and project planning.

• Lab Maintenance and Organization:
Maintain laboratory equipment, order supplies, and ensure that safety protocols are adhered to in compliance with university regulations. This includes keeping detailed laboratory records and participating in lab safety inspections.

Expected Salary:

$46,000 - $50,000 Annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday through Friday) or longer as necessitated by workload. Occasional weekend and holiday hours may be required as needed for ongoing experiments
