Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Communications Specialist will play a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and reputation of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. This position will be primarily responsible for creating engaging and informative written content for various platforms, including the department website, social media channels, newsletters, and magazines. The ideal candidate will have excellent marketing and communication skills and a curiosity about scientific and engineering fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Content Creation:
    • Develop compelling content to convey faculty research, student experiences, staff highlights, alumni achievements, and the department's impact on the world.
    • Translate complex scientific and engineering concepts into clear and engaging language for a general audience.
    • Write and edit content for the department website, social media platforms, newsletters, and magazines.
    • Ensure that all content is accurate, informative, and aligned with the department's brand and messaging.
  • Content Management:
    • Manage content calendars and schedules.
    • Collaborate with alumni, faculty, staff, and students to gather information and stories.
    • Assist with updating and maintaining the department's website and social media channels.
    • Assist with creation and distribution of seminar flyers.
  • Media Relations:
    • Coordinate with the College regarding media outreach and press releases.
    • Respond to media inquiries and requests.
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Conduct interviews with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
    • Represent the department at events and conferences.
  • Event Support:
    • Provide communications support for department events, conferences, and workshops.
    • Assist with creating event materials, such as press releases, printing name tags, invitations, and social media content.
Expected Salary:

$15 per hour

Minimum Requirements:
  • This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education communications.
  • Experience with email marketing campaigns.
  • Experience with Adobe suite, Canva, social media postings, and interviewing skills.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, media and graphic artistry skills. Strong storytelling ability. Strong proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work independently but well-coordinated with the marcom specialist as a team. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Curiosity about scientific and engineering fields.
