Classification Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience or a bachelor’s degree in appropriate areas of specialization and six years of experience.

Job Description:

This position is ultimately responsible for the development, implementation of new policies, regulatory requirements, workflows, and standard operating procedures across all UFHPL sites while supporting continuous operational improvement within the laboratory’s existing strategic framework. They will also be responsible for the updating and standardization of current policies and procedures.

This position directly leads and mentors Section Supervisors, providing operational direction, leadership coaching, and accountability for performance, staffing, and quality outcomes.

The position demands excellent communication, deft handling of personnel, sophisticated and comprehensive operational knowledge, and insightful leadership.

The Associate Director represents UFHPL while collaborating with leaders and clients throughout the UF Health System and in external outreach efforts, ensuring a clear understanding of how laboratory operations integrate within and support the broader UF Health System.

The Associate Director fosters and maintains a laboratory culture in which quality, patient safety, customer service, and physician satisfaction are core values.

 

Daily Operational Oversight

• Oversees the coordination of operations and workflow of the lab to achieve turn-around-time goals and satisfy client and pathologist needs
• Disseminates information to staff as necessary to maintain effective and safe practices
• Serves as the subject matter expert for complex technical and operational problem solving
• Oversees testing and laboratory functions according to SOPs and job specifications
• Ensures computer and middleware needs for each section are optimized to automate and integrate laboratory information systems with our processes

• Establishes workload, workflow, and staffing models across sections in collaboration with laboratory leadership to ensure operational efficiency across multiple sites

• Leads cross-functional coordination with IT, Sales & Marketing, Pathologists, leadership, and clients to onboard new services, testing, and laboratory sites

• Leads and participates in meetings and prepares materials as required

 

Financial and Resource Management 

  • Collaborates with the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Administration and laboratory leadership to support development, monitoring, and operational adherence to the annual laboratory budget

• Oversee budget planning through operational forecasting, staffing models, and resource utilization analysis

• Monitors budget targets and provides the Directors with reports; formulates plans to modify UFHPL operations as needed to meet budget targets
• Oversees sections and assists, if necessary, in determining requests for equipment acquisitions
• Ensures a cost analysis is performed on all new or updated tests
• Provides reviews and recommendations for updates on CPT/billing codes annually


Workforce Management and Staff Development

Responsible for workforce planning, staff development, and competency oversight across laboratory sections

• Achieves cross training and teamwork to minimize staffing needs and increase efficiency
• Ensures that all lab sections create and maintain a staffing schedule to cover all tasks required for laboratory operations on a daily basis
• Ultimately responsible for all staff and confirmation that all have been trained and demonstrate competency

• Promotes staff engagement, retention, and professional development through transparent communication and leadership visibility

• Assists in recruiting students from medical technology programs and the laboratory community, as needed.


Leads the Section Supervisors

• Provides oversight in assessing staff productivity data to monitor staffing and productivity

• Coaches and mentors Section Supervisors in leadership, decision-making, performance management, and accountability

• Coaches Section Supervisors on interviewing candidates and selecting new employees based on qualifications and interpersonal skills that would fit the position

• Guides Section Supervisors in personnel evaluation, feedback delivery, and development planning

• Provides oversight in the absence of a Section Supervisor, including for the Student Health Care Center Lab


Quality Control / Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement

• Ensures variances, errors and problems are tracked and corrective action is implemented to develop a culture of accountability and patient and staff safety
• Works with the Quality Coordinator to review monthly quality control and assurance program reports and incidents

• Ensures consistent quality assurance practices are implemented across all sections and laboratory sites

• Promotes the laboratory’s continuous improvement program

Expected Salary:

Expected salary is $170,000

Required Qualifications:
