Classification Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of related experience or a high school diploma and six years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Job Description:

Conducts and implement research project protocols by applying treatments, collecting data, and maintaining organized and accurate records. Drive state vehicle to various locations throughout Florida to collect insects, plants, and associated data for research trials. Maintain potted and planted ornamental plants and turfgrasses in greenhouses, nursery plots, and field sites for research. Collect insects from field sites and maintain colonies in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Expected to comply with defined laboratory operating procedures and guidelines.

Maintain proper function and organization of the laboratory by coordinating the procurement of materials, supplies, equipment, and study organisms for research projects. Maintain billing records to ensure proper account charges, track shipments to and from lab or field sites, track budget across project accounts. Communicate and coordinate activities with industry partners, funding organizations, and collaborators. Maintain inventories of consumable materials in laboratory, greenhouse, and other program facilities.

Maintain organized and functional laboratory facilities. Conduct safety-related tasks, including yearly EH&S inspections, and monthly safety self-audits. Prepare detailed and accurate notebooks and records.

Train undergraduate researchers in the laboratory and the field on research methods, operations of research equipment, lab safety, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Oversee training and scheduling of undergraduate researchers and student assistants. Assist graduate and undergraduate students with research projects when needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary: $21.07 - $24.46/hour commensurate with education and experience
Required Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience or a high school diploma and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, entomology, ecology, horticulture, agronomy, or other agricultural science discipline.

Knowledge of biological sciences, especially entomology terminology and methods associated with these sciences.

Experience with pesticides, their handling and use.

Experience working with insects and plants.

Experience working outdoors in Florida.

Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Proficiency with computer software and services including Microsoft Excel, Word, OneDrive, and Teams.

Flexible and able to adjust to changing work priorities and varied assignments.

Ability to maintain effective work relationships with faculty, staff, students, and clientele.
