NOTE. This position is covered by the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Test Act of 1991. Individuals applying for this position or incumbents of this position are required to hold a valid Class “B” or higher Florida commercial driver license (CDL) as a condition of employment. The act requires that all such individuals be subject to pre-employment, and continuing post-employment, drug and alcohol testing. Failure to comply with such testing is grounds for immediate dismissal from employment with UF.
Safely operates a large state vehicle in excess of 30,000 lbs. to remove waste and recycling from UF campus. Drives front-load refuse truck and empties contents of dumpsters and carts into the collection truck. Will also drive to some off-campus locations for collection and to disposal sites operated by Alachua County and private companies. Maintains collection information on paper reports or in electronic format via tablet noting the collection of sites as they are visited. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required in order to operate a truck of this size and maintaining a valid CDL is a requirement of the position. This includes annual CDL physical as well as CDL required random drug screenings as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Functions as part of the Recycling & Solid Waste Management team. Able to communicate effectively to the supervisor as well as other team members on a daily basis. This is a flexible work environment in which the team members fill in for different routes as needed.
Operates external equipment such as cart tippers in order to safely collect recyclable materials. Will move and relocate food carts, paper carts, comingled recyclables carts, and other collection containers in order to facilitate collection into the larger vehicle. Able to operate a smaller carrier truck capable of moving front-load dumpsters and collecting baled cardboard, furniture, and metals as well as other large items. May work campus events to provide recycling collection assistance during normal business hours and non-business hours such as nights and weekends. During daily route on campus, driver will report additional collection needs and note in documentation collections completed each day or will immediately phone or radio in if immediate attention is required. Identifies additional recycling activities on campus as observed in order to increase the campus recycling rate. Identifies and reports issues with recycling contamination on campus.
Daily performs and maintains vehicle inspection and keeps trip logs as required. At the end of the shift cleans cab and washes down collection vehicle. Notes any preventive maintenance or work that needs to be performed on the vehicle that might prevent its safe operation and performs light maintenance of the vehicle and reports major defects to the Supervisor. Performs station clean up as needed or directed.
Attends departmental meetings and other university related training sessions. Performs related work and general departmental work as required.
Position is considered as Essential Personnel as defined by UF Policy.
A Criminal background check and post offer health assessment will be conducted.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday – Friday is a typical schedule. Adjustments to this schedule may be required by the Supervisor during heavy volumes such as move in and move out periods. A monthly Saturday rotation is also a part of the normal schedule. When Saturday is a normally scheduled work day, the driver will typically have the next Monday as an additional day off. During large events such as football games, weekend work may be required. During periods of storm debris collection or other emergencies this position will be classified as essential personal and may be required to work to facilitate campus clean up. Some overtime may be required.

$20.86 - $21.28 Hourly; Based on experience.

| Minimum Requirements: |
Completion of ninth grade and One (1) year of relevant experience. Classified Driver License (CDL) appropriate to the type of vehicle operated required.
