Job Description:

This position will be responsible for troubleshoots, repairs and  preventative maintenance of EPI’s high-pressure high-temperature sterilization equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards under the Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP) and other governing bodies such as OSHA, CDC, as well as internal quality standards of the EPI and EH&S. Incumbent shall perform routine inspections and maintenance on steam, electrical and water systems to prevent or minimize downtime, and will diagnose mechanical, electrical and plumbing issues with sterilization systems, calibrate and validate pressure/temperature sensor and gauges for accurate sterilization cycles and replace consumable parts such as gaskets, door seals, filters and heating elements, as required.

The Engineer III will be committed to maintenance and repair of all other shared equipment within the facility.  This includes performing or setting up routine maintenance as outlined in equipment maintenance agreements and/or contracts, keeping maintenance logs, developing checklists for weekly inspection of core lab infrastructure, developing and implementing standardized logbooks for equipment usage, performing weekly review of these logs, and providing monthly updates of equipment usage to both the coordinator, facilities planning and Core Lab director.  As needed and appropriate, the person in this position will also attend factory certified training for specialized equipment and provide user specific training to various lab groups.  This position will also provide consultation on maintenance of service contracts for building shared equipment, working in collaboration with EPI investigators/staff/Associate Directors.

The Engineer III shall assist and coordinate maintenance of the biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratories in the main EPI building, working in collaboration with EH&S, EPI staff, and EPI Associate Directors.  This includes maintenance of specialized HVAC systems, autoclaves, biosecurity systems, and other components of the BSL3 system to assure compliance with Federal and state regulations for a facility of this type.  It also includes responsibility for the planning and development of the annual BSL3 research lab shutdown for preventive maintenance and renovation.  This includes efforts to minimize impact of the annual shutdown on investigator contract and/or grant deliverables; and coordination with all stakeholders (EPI lab faculty/staff/Associate Directors, Facilities Services, EH&S, and private contractors) to assure that all BSL3 mechanical systems and equipment are safe and operating appropriately.

The Engineer III will provide coverage of the EPI Facilities telephone line and will participate in on-call coverage for after-hour emergencies for the EPI labs and facilities on an assigned rotation.  This includes responding to water leaks, lab pressure and temperature changes, power outages, and audible alarms (freezers, fire panels, entry doors, etc.).  Primary role is to troubleshoot issues and contact the appropriate group (PPD, PI, or EH&S) to resolve issues. Provides loading dock coverage which includes receiving freight deliveries, bio-waste removal, and weekly laundry pick up/drop. Ensure UF EPI State vehicles are in working order, which may require operating a truck and electric golf cart and will require a valid FL driver’s license to operate.

The Engineer III will also assist the EPI IT team with maintaining the EPI’s server infrastructure, including but not limited to Max3, Freezer Pro, Select Agent servers, and will function as a Lenel administrator. The Engineer III may at times assist as backup support to the IT Generalist and IT Manager to handle EPI IT support tickets.

Required Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience; or master’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

The successful candidate must possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Florida driver's license.

Possess, or obtain within 120 days of hire, clearance with the USG Department of Justice’s Special Risk Assessment program for select agents.

Preferred:

Prefer master’s degree in engineering or construction management with at least three years of relevant experience in research, clinical, or pharmaceutical laboratory setting; familiarity with biosafety and biosecurity systems strongly preferred.
