Job Description:

The Core Research Facility Technician III supports biobanking of human tissue, histology and sample distribution performed at the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes' (nPOD) and the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D) Organ Processing and Pathology Core (OPPC) within the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine. This position performs complex procedures and techniques to support OPPC functions.

Duties include:

  • Performing case processing including receipt of tissue, scanning in microCT scanner, gross and fine dissection, tissue fixation, freezing, cell isolation and sample storage. Performing DNA and RNA extraction based on existing protocols. Providing on-call tissue grossing support for the nPOD and CARE-T1D programs.

  • Responding to sample requests. Assisting with sample archiving and retrieval for distribution. Operating multiple laboratory information management systems for sample tracking and histology.  Assisting in coordinating sample distributions and sample inventory management for two distinct biobanking projects.

  • Assist with generating, collecting, and analyzing data. Creating data reports. Assisting with slide scanning for Online Pathology systems and slide archival. Assisting in the collection and analysis of data generated by MicroCT scanner. Performing image acquisition and create 3D reconstructions and models. Assisting in collection and deidentification of donor information through donor medical chart extraction.

  • Assisting with routine lab maintenance including ordering calibrating and checking equipment for proper function. Assisting with periodic preventative maintenance on Core instruments. Troubleshoot equipment failures and arrange for or help with repairs.

  • Reviewing scientific literature to maintain and further understanding of Core technologies. Reviewing facility use data for reports. Edit and write SOPs.

  • Other duties as assigned

 
Expected Salary:

$45,000 - $50,000; commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

BA/BS in related scientific field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with human tissue, DNA extraction, RNA extraction, and cell isolation. Training will be provided.

  • Histology experience working with human tissue such as pancreas, heart, kidney, lymph nodes, spleen and others using a microtome or cryostat.

  • High attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

  • High proficiency in MS Office, especially Access and Excel.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and inventories.

  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills.
