Utilities Supervisor

High school diploma and five year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Manages the Locates of all underground utility facilities for accuracy and within the state’s regulations. Responsible for field training and developing technical staff in highly technical work involving operating equipment and instruments in order to locate, mark and protect main and service lines used for electric, chilled water, steam, water, wastewater, fiber-optic, gas, and reclaimed water facilities. Coordinate resources to ensure the department meets required regulated response times and avoid reasonable contractors’ delays while protecting the university assets. Maintains equipment and coordinates supplies by following purchasing policies and monitoring inventory. Approves direct reports hourly and leave time. Develops, maintains, and enforces production, safety, and work standards. Maintains UF compliance with Utilisphere / Sunshine One Call regulations. Responsible for assisting with locating in the repair of all Utility systems during emergencies.

Manages and coordinates with contractors dig permit applications. Responsible for assisting the applicant in the initiation the permit application by providing instructions regarding the process to the applicant, coordination of the process with other related University procedures, scheduling locale of University-owned underground utilities for the applicant. Reviews, approves and completes documentation related to work accomplished including UF Dig Permits. Ensures that all applicants follow the procedures according to the University of Florida Dig Permit, Sunshine One call and OSHA Excavation guide lines. Coordinates field appointments with contractors, engineers and other utilities to ensure locate and mark buried facilities in the vicinity of construction work are communicated effectively.

The lead responsible for updating, maintaining, and coordinating Geographic Information System (GIS) utility records by coordinating field findings with mapping technicians. Responsible for reviewing and using utility mapping and record information through GIS, AutoCAD, and construction prints; identifying and communicating record discrepancies; and providing timely field information to support accurate utility locates, dig permits, maintenance, and construction activities. Assists the utilities staff and project managers on location of existing underground assets and assists in identifying underground assets as they are discovered. 

Ability to accurately distinguish and interpret colors as necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Valid Florida Driver’s license required at time of appointment.

Criminal Background Check and post offer physical assessment is required.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is an Exempt position with schedule reflecting 5 days a week; Monday – Friday; total hours per week 40.

Rotating On-Call schedule within the group to cover emergency utility failures and emergency locate requests. 

$55,000.00 to $75,000.00 Annually

Five years’ experience in multiple utility facility location for the University of Florida.

Knowledge of approved principles, methods, materials used in electric, water, wastewater, gas, reclaimed water and telecommunications construction, maintenance and repair work.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of construction work. Must be able to interpret utilities systems construction blueprints and drawings.

Must be able to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.
