Job Description:

The University of Florida School of Music in the College of the Arts invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Assistant Professor of Violin. We seek an accomplished performer and pedagogue who will contribute to the continued success and growth of our BM, BA, MM, and DMA programs in violin. The successful candidate will recruit and teach a full studio of applied violin students. Other responsibilities could include teaching violin pedagogy, violin literature, or chamber music.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, maintain, and teach a successful full violin studio of undergraduate and graduate level students, including weekly private instruction of applied violin curriculum, studio class, and participation in area recitals/juries. (Additional responsibilities may include coaching chamber and/or teaching courses in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise.)
  • Maintain professional activities at the regional and national level as a performing artist consistent with the expectation of tenure and promotion
  • Service to the String area, School of Music, University, and the profession as consistent with expectation of tenure and promotion

SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Music plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the University, the College’s Creative Campus initiative and the community. The School has 40 full-time and nine adjunct faculty, serving some 200 graduate and 200 undergraduate music majors. Degree programs include B.S., B.A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and the Ph.D. in music education, composition, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. Program emphases include performance, music education, theory, composition, music history and literature, ethnomusicology, conducting, and sacred music. The School of Music is also home to the UF Bands program, which includes “The Pride of the Sunshine” Gator Marching Band. Expected Salary:

$65,000 max

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in violin performance or MM degree in violin performance with equivalent professional experience
  • Documented record of professional violin performances in the classical tradition consistent with faculty at a R-1 institution
  • Demonstrated command of solo, chamber, and orchestral violin repertoire and clear curricular teaching approach/philosophy that adapts to the needs and interests of students
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective engagement in studio recruitment and teaching at the collegiate level
  • Dedication to successful collaboration, organization, and collegiality with faculty, students, and staff
  • Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity, respect, open intellectual discourse, and the welcome incorporation and well-being of all in an environment of complex differences.
Preferred

Other desirable qualifications may include the following:

  • Doctoral degree and collegiate teaching experience of at least 3 to 5 years (beyond graduate assistantship)
  • Demonstrated capacity for clear, thoughtful, and engaging communication as a pedagogue, and enthusiastic commitment to creating a vibrant learning environment for students
  • Documented record of exceptional artistic achievement as a classical musician and collaborator recognized at a national or international level
  • Demonstrated record of successful university-level teaching experience and studio recruitment/cultivation
  • Ability to mentor graduate students at the masters’ and doctoral levels
  • Organizational, management and communication experience in the higher education setting
  • Evidence of success in negotiation and collaboration toward creative and administrative goals and dedication to enhancing our existing community of outstanding scholars and musicians
